BEING PENALIZED FOR BEING EFFICIENT
WHY BEING CHARGED BY THE HOUR HURTS

IT IS HARD TO DETERMINE A SET PRICE FOR A DESIGN / LOGO AND OR SERVICE IN GENERAL. EACH CREATIVE DESIGNER PROVIDES THEIR OWN PACKAGE OR SERVICE. THE LIST COULD BE BIG OR SMALL AND MAY INCLUDE A LOGO, COLOR, TYPOGRAPHY, ICONS AND PATTERNS JUST TO START. SOME MAY VALUE A LOGO TO $500 - $1000 DEPENDING ON THE ONE CREATING THE LOGO AND THE BUYER. SOME CREATIVES OFTEN CREATE A PACKAGE TO HAVE EVERYTHING TOGETHER FOR THE BUYER TO BUY IN FULL AND THE PRICE WOULD BE MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE.
THE QUESTION IS WHY IS IT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PRICE DIFFERENCES FOR A LOGO? COULD IT BE VALUE TO CLIENT, REPUTATION OF CREATOR OR WHAT THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT .... CHARGING FOR TIME. H&R BLOCK FOR EXAMPLE PAYED OVER A MILLION DOLLARS FOR A SIMPLE SQUARE LOGO. WHAT MANY DON'T REALIZE, IT WASN'T ABOUT THE TALENT TO MAKE THAT LOGO, IT WAS A COMBINATION OF CONVINCING THE WORTH. THE KEY IS YOU PRICE FOR THE CLIENT NOT THE JOB. THE MARK COULD BE ANYTHING BUT STILL HAVE A VALUE TO THE CLIENT. WITH THAT ASIDE, THE MAIN FOCUS ON TIME BRINGS UP THE QUESTION OF HOW MUCH YOUR TIME IS WORTH.
DESIGNERS CAN BE SO GOOD THAT LOGOS CAN BE CREATED IN FIVE MINUTES OR IT COULD TAKE SIX MONTHS. THE ISSUE THAT COMES UP IS THAT IF A CLIENTS BUDGET IS 18 THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND THEY ASK YOU WHAT YOUR HOURLY RATE IS THEY SHOULD NOT PENALIZE YOU FOR BEING FAST. THE REASON BEING IS THAT IF A DESIGNER IS ABLE TO DESIGN A LOGO AT THE SAME HOUR PRICE RATE AS ANOTHER DESIGNER BUT IS FASTER ... THE ONE WHO IS SLOWER GETS PAID MORE. THAT IS A BIG ISSUE BECAUSE SHOULDN'T THE DESIGNER WHO CREATES THE SAME LOGO BUT FASTER BE VALUED MORE THAN THE DESIGNER WHO TOOK LONGER?
THIS SCENARIO HAPPENS OFTEN AND FURTHER COMPLICATES WHY THERE IS NOT A UNIFIED SET PRICE FOR SERVICES. EVERY YEAR AS INTERNS AND YOUNG DESIGNERS ENTER THE WORLD IT BECOMES A STRUGGLE GRASPING HOW BACKWARDS SOME THINGS ARE. IN THE END IT IS IMPORTANT TO PRICE FOR YOUR CLIENT AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TRULY IS WORTH TO THEM IN THE LONG HAUL AND WHAT THE RETURN OF INVESTMENT IS.
